Thiopurines such as 6-Mercaptopurine, 6-thioguanine and azathioprine have an arrow therapeutic index that are used primarily in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, auto immune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and organ transplant recipientsDue to the potential life-threatening adverse effectsdosing initiation and monitoring are crucial in achieving the desired therapeutic goal. The course will be focusing onthe discussion on the pharmacogenetics and clinical practice guidelines of the thiopurinesEarly studies on the TPMT activity and frequency distribution will be discussed. The course will also heavily focus on the pharmacology of the thiopurines and howTPMT alleles interfere with the patients therapy. Dosing computation and monitoring parameterwill be highlighted based on the individual’s genotype or phenotype.TPMT allele frequency based on ethnicity will be discussed and studies involving Filipinos will be focused

The webinar aims to

  1. Raise awareness on updates regarding safety of locally available medications from different regulatory agencies around the globe and available published literatures
  2. Provide adequate information on the adverse effects reported (e.g. risk factors, dependencies, onset, duration, severity)
  3. Instruct on the preventive and monitoring strategies needed to address the safety announcements
  4. Discuss how the information can be translated to their respective patients
  5. Equip participants with proper understanding on the current state of knowledge on the different drug-related safety announcements

At the end of the webinar, the participants will be able to

  1. Understand the pharmacology of thiopurineand analyze the steps in the pathway that area affected by TPMT alleles
  2. Appreciate the importance of preemptive genotyping in patients receiving thiopurines
  3. Interpret genotyping results and phenotype status of patients and guide prescriberin correctly dosing the thiopurines
  4. Correlate ethnic study results in devising preventive and monitoring measures in patients startewith thiopurines
  5. Be pioneers in the movement towards personalized medicine, particularly with thiopurines
